Assassinio sul Nilo, il film diretto e interpretato da Kenneth Branagh, è basato sull'omonimo romanzo di Agatha Christie, già portato sul grande schermo nel 1978 nel film con Peter Ustinov nei panni di Hercule Poirot.
La storia originale vede Linnet Ridgeway (Gal Gadot), bella e ricca ereditiera, che ha appena sposato il fidanzato (Armie Hammer) della sua migliore amica Jacqueline de Bellefort.
Per la loro luna di miele, gli sposi decidono di fare una crociera sul Nilo. Tra i passeggeri del battello si trova, ovviamente, il celebre detective belga Hercule Poirot. Una sera, Jacqueline fa irruzione sulla barca e spara al suo ex fidanzato, ferendola a una gamba.
