Un extraterrestre è abbandonato sulla Terra dai suoi compagni, obbligati a ripartire in tutta fretta. Gli uomini gli danno la caccia, ma un gruppo di bambini lo nasconde. Nasce un'amicizia, ma l'alieno (battezzato E.T.) ha nostalgia di casa e cerca in tutti i modi di mettersi in contatto con i suoi. Sarà proprio grazie ai ragazzi che riuscirà a sfuggire agli agguati di militari e scienziati.
